The tests demonstrated that high-speed, uninterrupted internet could be reliably delivered over a distance of 669km through dense forests and inaccessible terrain where traditional network infrastructure such as cell towers and fibre optics are absent.
Rail transport remains a crucial component of sub-Saharan Africa’s economy, facilitating the movement of millions of tonnes of freight and hundreds of thousands of passengers annually. However, much of the railway network has historically operated in areas lacking modern connectivity, limiting operational efficiency and passenger experience. The recent satellite internet tests mark a significant step toward bridging this gap.
Utilizing Airtel Satellite for Business in conjunction with Eutelsat OneWeb’s low-earth orbit satellite constellation, the trial maintained a consistent connection throughout most of the train’s journey between key urban centres. The results showcased a strong, reliable, and stable connection even as the train passed through dense forested areas. Detailed performance assessments revealed that connection speeds reached up to 100Mbps for downloads and 20Mbps for uploads, sufficient for supporting train operations and multiple passenger devices simultaneously. These figures closely aligned with the trial’s targeted traffic plan, affirming the system’s capability to deliver high-capacity internet on the move.
The successful trial demonstrated minimal disruption, low latency, and stable performance despite the challenges posed by constant motion and remote surroundings. This achievement underscores the potential of satellite technology to provide connectivity where conventional solutions fall short, opening new horizons for technological advancement across the continent.
Beyond technological significance, this milestone offers tangible benefits for railway safety, efficiency, and passenger services. Real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and emergency response capabilities can now be enhanced with reliable internet connectivity.
