Zambia partners with UNDP to connect 751 health facilities

The Zambian government, through the Smart Zambia Institute's e-government division, has signed a strategic agreement with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to expand internet connectivity to 751 health facilities nationwide.

This collaboration is a key component of the Smart Health Systems (SHS) project, designed to modernise and strengthen the country's digital health infrastructure.

The initiative focuses on providing stable, secure internet access to medical centres, including those in rural and underserved areas. Enhanced connectivity will enable facilities to exchange data seamlessly, implement telemedicine services, track electronic medical records, and improve coordination across public health services — ultimately improving healthcare delivery and response.

Smart Zambia Institute will lead the technical deployment, ensuring the smooth implementation of infrastructure, while UNDP will contribute logistical support and funding to facilitate the project.

This effort aims to bolster the resilience of Zambia’s health system, promote the digitalisation of public services, and improve health data collection — critical for managing epidemics and informing public health policies. Connecting these 751 health centres aligns with Zambia’s broader "Smart Zambia" strategy, which seeks to harness digital technology for inclusive national development and improved service delivery across sectors.
