Russia’s largest mobile operator MTS has signed an agreement with Huawei to develop 5G technology as the Chinese tech giant faces mounting pressure from the US.

The 5G deal was one of several cooperation agreements signed after talks between president Vladimir Putin and Chinese president Xi Jinping in Moscow.

The Kremlin website lists the deal as a “memorandum of understanding.”

According to reports, pilot launches of the advanced cellular network technology will be held this year and in 2020.

Headquartered in Russia’s capital city, Moscow, MTS also operates in Ukraine, Armenia and Belarus.

As of 2017, it had over 106.5 million subscribers in the four countries.

In Russia alone it had a market share of 31% with 78.3 million subscribers.
