EU and UNICEF partner to connect schools

10 October 2023

The European Union and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) have committed to providing internet access to 1,300 schools in underserved areas of Africa.

The initiative is implemented as part of the GIGA program, which was established by UNICEF and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), with the aim to connect every school to the internet by 2030. It is financed by a grant of Euro9.8 million from the EU. The institution also plans to mobilize Euro9.9 million for the digitalization of technical and vocational education centres in the country.

This financing is part of the European Union's ‘Global Gateway’ investment strategy, which aims to advance the dual digital and green transition and provide reliable and sustainable connections to partner countries. In Kenya, the digital component aims to increase digital connectivity, provide support for digital skills, and ensure open and inclusive digital governance. The project will support the Kenyan government's stated vision of putting digital technology at the service of the country's socio-economic development.
