Ghana approves Starlink’s application

29 April 2024

The National Communications Authority of Ghana (NCA) has approved the application of SpaceX Starlink GH LTD to provide satellite broadband internet services in the country.

The NCA announced that the administrative procedures for the issuance of the operating license are underway and should be completed shortly.

“The approval of the application follows the policy approval of the satellite licensing framework in Ghana by the Ministry of Communications and Digitalization,” said the NCA in a statement.

The process was accelerated after internet service disruptions occurred a few weeks ago due to incidents on various submarine fibre optic cables. The granting of licenses to satellite telecom service operators is part of the measures put in place by the NCA to avoid such situations in the future and guarantee good quality of service to consumers.

Starlink's entry into the Ghanaian telecoms market is expected to help strengthen competition and improve Internet adoption in the country. The company will be able to provide its services directly to consumers using its kit or rent its capacities to telecom operators and Internet service providers to fill the latter's coverage gaps. It plans to launch its commercial activities in Ghana from the third quarter of 2024.
