CSquared to explore open fibre optic backbone in Africa

02 May 2024

CSquared has signed a grant agreement with the United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) for carrying out of a feasibility study for the construction of a transcontinental open access fibre optic backbone in Africa. The infrastructure is expected to help connect millions more people to the internet on the continent.

The feasibility study will include an assessment of potential fibre optic routes across the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. It will also assess the expansion of fibre network infrastructure along the backbone and the extension of last mile connections to towers, businesses, and homes.

According to Eddie Irungu, CFO of CSquared Group, the initiative is part of the company's ambition to digitally connect Africa and make connectivity more accessible and affordable.’ In January 2024, the company launched a 350 km fibre optic backbone in Liberia, in partnership with the USAID.

“Digital access is transforming the economic landscape in Kenya and across Africa by opening new opportunities for businesses, workers and entrepreneurs,” said Meg Whitman, U.S. Ambassador to Kenya.
