MTN Uganda is seeking stakeholder input on a planned separation of its mobile money service, MoMo, from its main telecommunications operations. The company indicated that the proposal will be discussed at an upcoming Extraordinary General Meeting scheduled for 2 July.
If the plan is approved, the fintech division will be operated by a new company controlled by MTN Group Fintech Holdings B.V., alongside a trust established to benefit minority shareholders following a merger. This move aligns with regulatory requirements and regional strategic objectives.

Vodacom has set an ambitious target to increase its mobile financial services subscriber base to 120 million by 2030, up from 88 million at the end of the 2025 financial year (1 April 2024 – 31 March 2025). This goal is part of ‘Vision 2030,’ Vodacom’s five-year strategic plan.
To achieve this, Vodacom is leveraging its ecosystem of super apps, notably M-Pesa and VodaPay, to expand access to basic financial services such as peer-to-peer transfers, payments, and credit advances, while progressively introducing more sophisticated offerings like savings, loans, insurance, and international transfers. The company also plans to launch wealth management tools for individuals and financing solutions for SMEs.

M-PESA is embarking on a mission to empower Ethiopia's tech innovators and enhance financial inclusion in the country.
In collaboration with its sister company, Safaricom Ethiopia, M-PESA aims to address significant financial inclusion gaps by offering mobile payments, savings, lending, and various other financial services to underserved communities lacking access to traditional banking.

There’s no denying the popularity of mobile money across the continent.
The GSMA reports that registered mobile money accounts grew 12% year-on-year to 1.75 billion in 2023, with some 435 million active by year-end – a 9% annual rise. Transaction volumes grew by 14% year-on-year, while, importantly for the operators, average revenue per user was up from $2.2 in September 2022 to $3.2 in June 2023 – resulting in higher profitability.
