Rain becomes SA’s fourth telco with 4G offering

11 May 2023

Rain has unveiled a 4G mobile telephony offer, making it South Africa’s fourth telecommunications company. The move may be part of Rain's plan to become more competitive in the South African telecoms market after failed merger attempts with Telkom.

Rain announced plans to expand its 4G and 5G mobile services across South Africa. The implementation of these projects has been facilitated by new capacities that Rain acquired in March 2022 during the spectrum auction organized by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA). The company had procured 40MHz of additional frequencies for 1.4 billion rand.

“Customers now have another option for mobile services from a provider that has already established a solid reputation in the home Internet market. Rain's network expansion, both in 5G coverage and spectrum acquisition, indicates that we are serious about being a major player in the mobile market as well,” said Brandon Leigh, director general, Rain.
