Somalia and ITU partner on connectivity

The Somalian Ministry of Communication and Technology has signed a cooperation agreement with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to develop connectivity in Somalia.

The partners will collaborate to improve ICT, digital politics, regulation of digital skills and power growth, connecting infrastructure, building confidence using digital services.

Minister of communication and technology, Jaamac Hassan Khaliif, said that the partnership ‘strengthens’ its ties with the ITU and it will ‘promote the modernisation and transformation of Somalia’ through the building and developing of technology in Somalia.

Six Somalian operators signed a voice interconnection agreement in December 2022 to deliver lower tariffs and boost usage. The government recently followed other African nations in banning TikTok and messaging service Telegram, to stem the spread of misinformation.
