All Nigerian SIM cards now produced domestically

27 June 2024

All SIM cards used in Nigeria are now produced domestically according to Babagana Digima, head of new media and information security at the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

This achievement comes just under two years after the Nigerian government banned the importation of SIM cards into the country as part of an initiative to promote local content and indigenous participation in the telecoms industry. A SIM card manufacturing plant was opened in Lagos in June 2022 with a production capacity of 200 million cards per year.

“We are currently sponsoring the manufacturing of a corrugated ordinal sheath, which will be the first of its type in Africa. We also encourage local production of telecommunications towers and fibre optic cables. Coleman Cables, a local manufacturer, has surpassed the only other Egyptian producer in capacity and continues to expand,” said Digima.
