MTN Nigeria is building a new carrier-neutral data centre in Lagos, according to chief technical officer, Mohammed Rufai. The new data centre will be Tier 4 and will have 1,500 racks.
“Our facility will provide the space and services needed for businesses to digitise their operations and improve efficiency. The data centre will also enhance content delivery by major technology companies such as Meta and Google, by bringing content closer to Nigerian users and improving access speeds,” said Rufai.
The announcement comes about four months after Airtel Africa announced the construction of a data centre in Nigeria through its subsidiary Nxtra. This reflects the telecom operators’ desire to further diversify their businesses and revenue streams beyond traditional telecom services amidst accelerated digital transformation.
