Ethio Telecom has launched 5G mobile services in the city of Bahadar - its sixth city after Addis Ababa, Adama, Jigjiga, Dire Dawa and Harar.
The company promises its subscribers in this northwestern Ethiopian city speeds of up to 10Gbps, low latency and increased communication capacity.
“The deployment of the fifth generation network will significantly reduce network congestion, enabling individuals to benefit from fast and high-quality communications, digital solutions and financial services,” said Ethio Telecom in a statement.
The initiative is part of the actions undertaken by the operator to strengthen its telecoms infrastructure and the quality of its services. Ethio Telecom recently unveiled an ambitious $1 billion investment plan for the 2024-2025 financial year, mainly focused on developing its infrastructure. This plan includes extending 4G coverage to 500 additional cities and implementing 5G in 15 other localities.
The expansion of the 5G network will allow the operator to meet a growing demand for high-speed connectivity, while paving the way for new applications, particularly in the field of the Internet of Things (IoT). Potential applications include autonomous cars, real-time connected healthcare systems, and the creation of smart cities, thereby improving the efficiency and quality of services.
