Safaricom Ethiopia and partners to launch digital payment system for healthcare

24 March 2025

Safaricom Ethiopia is embarking on an initiative aimed at shaping the digital landscape in the East African nation by collaborating with a financial services provider and the Federal Ministry of Health. Together, they are set to introduce a safe, efficient, and scalable digital payment system designed specifically for the healthcare sector.

The primary objectives are to enhance financial inclusion, simplify healthcare payment processes, and improve overall service delivery across Ethiopia. The agreement will integrate M-PESA’s advanced digital payment technology within healthcare facilities, facilitating cashless transactions, automating insurance payments, and ensuring timely salary disbursements for health extension workers.

A pilot phase of the project will be rolled out in selected health facilities, accompanied by financial literacy training aimed at healthcare professionals and beneficiaries alike.

“By joining forces, we are making significant strides toward creating a more inclusive, efficient, and transparent healthcare system,” said Safaricom Ethiopia in a statement.“This initiative represents a valuable contribution to Ethiopia’s wider digital transformation agenda. By collaborating with key partners, we aspire to build a healthcare system that is more inclusive, efficient, and transparent, ultimately serving the needs of all Ethiopians and supporting the vision of Digital Ethiopia 2025.”
