Tunisia explores private 5G networks with new frequency range allocation

06 April 2025

Tunisian authorities are taking significant steps towards the deployment of private 5G networks by evaluating the allocation of the 3.3-3.4 GHz frequency range.

This initiative aims to empower companies to establish dedicated networks that cater to their specific operational needs. The National Frequency Agency (ANF) has opened a public consultation process, which will run until 18 April, inviting feedback from stakeholders on this transformative move.

The ANF touts the 3.3-3.4 GHz band as a balanced choice, providing an ideal mix of coverage and throughput for private 5G applications. With potential data transfer speeds reaching several gigabits per second, this frequency range is well-suited to meet the rigorous demands of high-performance industrial applications.

The agency’s consultation document highlights that the advent of 5G networks in Tunisia goes beyond merely enhancing broadband connectivity. It underscores an escalating interest in the establishment of private networks across various sectors. The private 5G market is anticipated to offer substantial opportunities for businesses and manufacturers, with expectations of rapid growth in response to the rising demand for high-quality, low-latency connectivity solutions.

However, the transition to this frequency range is not without challenges. Historically, several North African nations, including Tunisia, have utilized the 3.3-3.4 GHz band for military maritime radar systems, particularly along coastlines and aboard naval vessels. To ensure a harmonious coexistence between telecommunications operations and radar systems, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has suggested that mitigation techniques and specific measures be implemented to prevent potential interference.

As Tunisia weighs this critical step towards advancing its telecommunications infrastructure, the successful integration of private 5G networks has the potential to reshape industries and enhance operational efficiencies across the country. With public consultation underway, stakeholders will have the opportunity to participate in shaping the future of connectivity in Tunisia, laying the groundwork for an innovative and dynamic digital landscape.
