Morocco is set to make significant strides in telecommunications with ambitious plans to deploy 5G technology to cover 25% of its population by the end of 2025 and reach 70% by 2030..jpg?lu=409)
These objectives are outlined within the national program known as Maroc Digital 2030, which aims to enhance the country's digital landscape. The National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT) has announced that the rollout is expected to officially begin in November 2025, with initial efforts concentrating on densely populated urban areas, key economic regions such as industrial zones and technology parks, and innovation hubs.
This deployment will coincide with the African Cup of Nations (CAN) football tournament, a high-profile event anticipated to attract millions of visitors to Morocco. In preparation for this influx, telecom operators will be required to adhere to new specifications currently being finalized by the ANRT. These specifications include specific commitments regarding coverage and service quality to ensure that the event is well-supported by robust connectivity.
In line with these developments, Maroc Telecom and Inwi have announced the formation of two joint ventures in March 2025, targeting both optical fibre and mobile network expansion. The FiberCo venture aims to deploy one million optical fibre sockets within the first two years and three million over five years. The TowerCo will focus on increasing the number of mobile phone towers, planning to establish 2,000 towers in three years and 6,000 in ten years. This collaborative approach aligns with the Maroc Digital 2030 strategy, which emphasizes the importance of pooling resources and co-investing in infrastructure. The first three years of this initiative are supported by an investment of 4.4 billion Moroccan dirhams, which is approximately US$475 million.
