Zoodlabs, a Sierra Leone-based telecommunications provider, has announced the rollout of one of the country’s first 5G networks, emphasizing sustainability and enhanced connectivity.
Unveiled at the Digital Government Summit in Freetown, the project leverages renewable energy solutions supplied by CrossBoundary Energy to power critical infrastructure.
CrossBoundary Energy is deploying solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, battery storage, and generators to ensure 99.9% network uptime while reducing reliance on fossil fuels and lowering emissions. The company is also financing the deployment of five towers, accelerating the network’s expansion across the country.
“Our approach maximizes uptime and boosts renewable energy penetration, significantly reducing diesel generator use. This provides telecom operators like Zoodlabs with a reliable, affordable, and cleaner power source that’s independent of the utility grid or fossil fuels,” said Oliver Benham, Director of Operations for Telecom Solutions at CrossBoundary Energy.
The deployment of 5G technology will bring faster data speeds, lower latency, and increased device connectivity — transforming Sierra Leone’s digital landscape. With broadband penetration currently just over 20%, this leapfrogging network aims to foster digital inclusion, offering improved access to services for businesses and individuals alike, especially in the capital, Freetown.

Initial towers are located in Freetown, with plans to expand 5G coverage throughout Sierra Leone, marking a significant step toward a more connected, inclusive, and sustainable digital economy.
