The ‘Second Submarine Cable Project’ aims to bolster regional connectivity by providing critical international internet links for Liberia, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, and Sierra Leone.
The project is designed not only to improve connectivity but also to establish redundancy across the region, as each of these countries currently relies on a single international subsea cable via the Africa Coast to Europe (ACE) network. A recent feasibility study, carried out by the ECOWAS Commission’s Project Preparation and Development Unit (PPDU) in partnership with telecoms consulting firm TACTIS, was completed last Friday, laying the groundwork for the project’s next phases.
By deploying this second cable, the initiative intends to significantly strengthen the digital infrastructure of all five nations, ensuring more reliable and resilient internet access for millions of citizens. The move is viewed as a strategic step towards regional integration and a critical enhancement to West Africa’s digital landscape.
