Airtel Malawi launches 5G services

21 November 2025

Airtel Malawi has officially inaugurated its 5G network in several districts, alongside the nationwide rollout of Voice over LTE (VoLTE) for its existing 4G network.

The 5G service is now active on 56 sites across ten districts, including Lilongwe, Blantyre, Mzuzu City, Kasungu, Mangochi, Mchinji, Mzimba, and Zomba.

The telecom provider highlighted that the new 5G network’s ultra-low latency and high capacity will support the development of smart cities, e-health initiatives, digital education, and advanced enterprise applications.

This launch comes four months after competitor TMN introduced its own 5G services in Lilongwe in July.

Regarding VoLTE, Airtel Malawi announced that it is now accessible across all its sites nationwide. The upgrade promises clearer voice calls, faster connection times, and the ability to make calls using 4G data — eliminating the need to fall back to 3G or 2G during voice calls.

Airtel Malawi Managing Director Aashish Dutt stated that the deployment of both 5G and VoLTE reflects years of strategic planning and network expansion efforts.

In addition to these enhancements, Airtel Malawi has been investing in other infrastructure improvements, including expanding international fibre routes through Tanzania and Mozambique, reinforcing local transmission lines, and deploying 90 additional sites across the country, the report added.
