Rwanda launches eKash

09 December 2025

Rwanda has officially unveiled its National Digital Payment System, eKash, marking a significant milestone in the country’s journey toward establishing a fully interoperable financial ecosystem.

This launch represents years of effort to transition from a fragmented payments landscape to a unified platform capable of supporting a cashless economy.

eKash connects banks, mobile money providers, and other financial service entities into a single national system, enabling instant, secure, and seamless transactions across various channels. This development aligns with Rwanda’s broader digital transformation goals and its vision for sustainable economic growth.

The initiative is the result of collaboration among key national and international stakeholders, including the Rwandan government, the National Bank of Rwanda, Access to Finance Rwanda, the AfricaNenda Foundation, the Rwanda Information Society Authority, the Gates Foundation, and the Mojaloop Foundation community. Notably, the platform was built entirely with regional technical expertise, showcasing the capabilities of African engineers and developers.

Originally conceived over a decade ago as a policy initiative, eKash has evolved into a digital public good aimed at simplifying payments for citizens and businesses, while also bolstering financial inclusion. The launch underscores Rwanda’s commitment to developing modern, scalable financial infrastructure that can serve as a model for other African nations striving for digital financial inclusion and a cashless future.
