Zimbabwe accelerates its space technology ambitions with the upcoming launch of ZIMSAT-3, a key initiative under the country's National Development Strategy 2 (NDS 2) for 2026–2030. 
This move signals a strategic push toward building a knowledge-based, digitally empowered economy, with satellite connectivity playing a central role in national development efforts.
Part of a broader plan to enhance Zimbabwe’s space and ICT capabilities, ZIMSAT-3 aims to bridge the digital divide by extending high-speed internet to rural and underserved areas where traditional infrastructure remains limited. This effort aligns with the government’s vision of inclusive growth and universal digital access, leveraging satellite technology as a vital tool for social and economic development.
The strategy also emphasizes the importance of resilient ICT infrastructure as the backbone for economic expansion across sectors such as agriculture, mining, health, and education. Satellite systems are expected to improve data collection, geological mapping, and environmental monitoring, thereby supporting better resource management and informed policymaking.
ZIMSAT-3 is closely tied to Zimbabwe’s Education 5.0 framework, which champions innovation, industrialization, and the development of home-grown solutions. Enhanced connectivity through satellite technology is anticipated to bolster research, foster innovation, and develop skills, creating a stronger link between education, technology, and national productivity.
The project also forms a critical part of Zimbabwe’s digital transformation agenda by enabling the expansion of e-government services, which will lead to more efficient, transparent, and accessible public services. Additionally, improved broadband access is expected to open new economic opportunities, especially for youth entrepreneurs and the creative industries, by connecting local talent to regional and global markets.
Through its investment in ZIMSAT-3, Zimbabwe aims to reduce dependence on external digital infrastructure, positioning itself as a competitive, technology-driven economy within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region and beyond. The initiative reflects the country’s commitment to long-term digital sovereignty, innovation, and sustainable development.
