The Gambia adopts fibre policy

25 April 2023

The Gambian government has adopted a ‘National Fiber Protection Policy’ to ensure the safety and protection of fibre optic cables and to minimize damage or risk of damage to these telecom infrastructures.

The policy clearly defines the roles, responsibilities, and obligations of all players in the fibre optic infrastructure ecosystem and sets out the conditions of violation and the consequences. People who engage in fibre optic cuts can now be fined a minimum of half a million Gambian Dalasis as repair costs.

The new policy proved necessary amidst the resurgence of fibre cuts and vandalism on fibre optic infrastructure in The Gambia. Gamtel deplored this phenomenon in March 2022.
