Tanzania aims for sovereign satellite

Samia Suluhu Hassan, president of the United Republic of Tanzania, has revealed that the country plans to build its own satellite “in the near future.” Details such as the type of the satellite or the engineering team were not disclosed.

This announcement from Tanzania comes as the governments of African countries are showing growing interest in space programs and increasing investment in the sector.

According to Space In Africa’s annual space industry review, the satellite sector in Africa is is expected to reach $22.64 billion in 2026 while it was valued at $19.49 billion in 2021. The same report indicates that African nations allocated a total of $534.9 million to space programs in 2022 compared to $523.2 million in 2021.
