20 June 2023

MTN South Africa (MTN SA) has launched a series of hybrid wind and solar renewable energy projects in South Africa. The company wants to produce green energy to power its assets and reduce its dependence on the public electricity supplier Eskom, which is increasing load shedding.

The rollout will begin with a small-scale test phase in Worcester, in the Western Cape province. This pilot phase will be followed by deployments in the Eastern Cape province. The entire project should be completed by the third quarter of the year.

The initiative is part of the MTN Group's objective to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2040, ten years earlier than the sectoral trajectory defined by the GSMA. The company has implemented a four-phase green energy program that includes the deployment of on-site renewable energy, off-site renewable energy purchase agreements and improving the energy efficiency of its buildings. and its infrastructure.

“MTN is firmly on track to deliver large-scale, deep-rooted, beneficial alternative energy projects that make a difference for the planet while ensuring our customers maintain network stability and excellence. Everyone deserves to benefit from a modern, connected life, and innovation cannot stop as we work to deliver on this promise,” said Charles Molapisi, managing director of MTN SA.
