CRAN to open new spectrum auction

10 July 2023

The Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) is planning to launch a new auction of the 3.5GHz spectrum band for the country's 5G rollout.

State-owned telecom companies MTC and Telecom Namibia have confirmed that they will again participate in the regulator's planned 5G spectrum auction.

Last February, CRAN launched the process of auctioning blocks of telecom frequencies in the 700MHz and 800MHz bands to improve 4G coverage and deploy 5G. The initiative is part of the Namibian government's commitment to establish advanced telecommunications services and encourage technological innovation in the country.

"With the allocation of spectrum to competent operators, Namibia aims to leverage the potential of 5G to improve connectivity and efficiency in sectors that can benefit from its high-speed, low-latency capabilities," said Helene Vosloo, head of economics and sector research at CRAN. “This will enable operators to deliver enhanced services, leveraging 5G capabilities to support data-intensive applications and unlock innovative solutions in areas such as automation, Internet of Things (IoT) and intelligent infrastructure.”
