Kenya and South Sudan have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to build a fibre optic connection.
Kenya’s President William Ruto said that the two countries are working together on infrastructure projects to strengthen regional integration and trade. Kenya is eager to carry out infrastructure projects as part of the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia-Transport Corridor project (LAPSSET).
The project is aimed at uniting Kenya, Ethiopia, and South Sudan in East Africa. The completion of the LAPSSET Corridor Project will improve the East African region's role as a gateway and transport-logistical hub.
Kenya and South Sudan, according to Ruto, have also agreed to use the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement to boost bilateral trade.
"President Kiir and I had the opportunity to share ideas about collaborating to seize emerging opportunities to improve the trade balance between our two nations," said Ruto.
Kenya's cooperation with South Sudan comes as the Kenyan president is leading investor efforts to expand high-speed internet service throughout the country. According to Ruto, his administration has prioritised the 'digital superhighway' as a major aspect in Kenya's development, job creation, and economic growth.
