The Ghanaian government has approved the landing of the 2Africa fibre optic submarine cable of the consortium led by Meta, according to Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, minister of communications and digitization..png?lu=663)
2Africa will strengthen Ghana's broadband telecom infrastructure. The country is already connected to five international fibre optic submarine cables, namely South Atlantic Telecommunications cable no.3 (SAT-3), MainOne Cable System, West Africa Cable System (WACS), Glo-1 and Africa Coast to Europe (ACE).
“By adopting this initiative, we anticipate a reduction in transit costs, which will make internet services more affordable. We encourage internet and network service providers, banking switch notes and government service portals to engage in open peering with the clearinghouse in Ghana, which is critical to fostering a local ecosystem peering and interconnection dynamics,” said Owusu-Ekuful.
Once commissioned, the 2Africa cable is expected to not only improve the quality and reduce the cost of internet services in Ghana, but also extend the reach of these services to millions more people.
