Léon-Juste Ibombo, Congolese minister of posts, Telecommunications and the Digital Economy, has launched construction work on Congo's second fibre optic backbone..png?lu=437)
The construction is entrusted to Congo Cables with the support of the Post and Electronic Communications Regulatory Agency (ARPCE), Airtel Congo, Congo Telecom, and Silicone Connect.
The new network will connect the cities of Pointe-Noire and Brazzaville. Its construction follows the country's recent connection to the 2Africa submarine fibre optic cable, for which it will transport data with a capacity of 10Gb. It will also carry data from the WACS (West Africa Cable System) cable, strengthening Congo's national broadband infrastructure.
Once operational, the new backbone will improve electronic communications services and reduce service costs, as well as delivering services to millions more people. This should also accelerate the digital transformation ambitions of the Congolese government, which has decided to make the digital economy a fundamental axis of the country's socio-economic development.
“Congolese businesses will be able to benefit from a faster internet connection, facilitating trade and access to international markets. In addition, public services such as education and health care can be improved through better connectivity. At the beginning of the implementation of value-added services, and the arrival of 5G, the tests of which have already been conclusive in our country, this project opens up new perspectives for Congo,” said Ibombo.
