NCC grants MTN authority to partially disconnect Glo

09 January 2024

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has given MTN authorization to partially disconnect Globacom (Glo) from its telecoms network for non-payment of interconnection fees.

After examining the situation, the telecoms regulator considered that Glo did not have valid reasons not to pay its debt.

The NCC gave a deadline of ten days for the resolution of the problem. After this period, Globacom subscribers will no longer be able to make calls to MTN, but will be able to receive them, until further notice. Calls between Glo subscribers will not be impacted.

MTN had already partially blocked Glo subscribers for non-payment of interconnection fees which amounted to 4.4 billion naira at the end of 2019. The suspension lasted for five days and ended when Glo made a partial payment of N2.6 billion and made commitments to settle the remaining debt. In October 2019, the NCC authorized Airtel Nigeria to partially disconnect Glo from its telecoms network for similar reasons.
