ART gives cable TV companies 15 days to release mobile spectrum

02 February 2024

The Cameroon Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ART) is asking cable television companies in the Central region to remove intermediate frequencies between 700MHz and 80 MHz within 15 days to release these channels which have already been assigned to mobile telephone operators.

“The objectives pursued by the ART are, on the one hand, to resolve the interference problems encountered in the aforementioned frequency bands caused by the amplifiers of cable distributors and, on the other hand, to thus absorb the degradation of quality of service (QoS) of electronic communications offered to consumers,” said ART in a statement.

This initiative comes while Cameroonian telecom operators are having trouble meeting the obligations contained in their specifications, particularly regarding quality of service, coverage and performance of access networks, tariff offers and use of radio frequencies.

The release of frequencies should help improve the quality and coverage of electronic communications services in Cameroon, particularly in the Central region where the capital Yaoundé is located.
