Djibouti to gain second data centre

16 May 2024

PAIX Data Centers has created a joint venture with the Sovereign Fund of Djibouti (FSD) to build a cloud and carrier neutral data centre in Djibouti to meet growing demand in connectivity, content delivery networks, social media and computing dematerialized.

The new data centre – JIB1 - will have approximately 50,000 square feet of usable space and up to 5MW of computing capacity. Commissioning of the first phase of the installation is planned for 2026.

JIB1 will strengthen Djibouti's telecoms infrastructure in a context of accelerated digital transformation. The country is connected to ten submarine cables with three more under construction. However, it only has one data centre: the Djibouti Data Center (DDC).

“At the heart of the African digital economy, Djibouti plays a strategic role in facilitating connectivity between Africa, the Middle East and Asia. PAIX Djibouti will serve as a catalyst for digital inclusion and economic development, enabling businesses to unlock new opportunities and realize their full potential in the digital age,” said Jean-André Gbarssin, managing director of the FSD.
