Guinea considers interconnecting fibre with Sierra Leone

30 July 2024

Guinea is considering interconnecting its national fibre optic network with that of Sierra Leone, according to Rose Pola Pricemou, Guinea's Minister of Posts, Telecommunications and Digital Economy.

The announcement comes about a month after Guinea and Mali signed a partnership agreement to interconnect via fibre optics. The initiative reflects the authorities' desire to strengthen the national digital infrastructure to better meet the growing demand for high-speed connectivity. The country is currently connected to a single submarine cable, on which it depends for its international connectivity. Guinea is also preparing to connect to a new cable.

This initiative should not only help improve the quality and coverage of connectivity services in Guinea, but also reduce their costs. Improving and generalizing access to the internet should help accelerate the achievement of the Guinean government's digital transformation ambitions.
