Orange Liberia announces $200 million investment to expand network and enhance services

21 May 2025

Orange Liberia has unveiled a $200 million investment plan over the next six years aimed at fostering growth and improving connectivity across the country. The primary focus is to expand network coverage and boost service quality, especially in underserved rural areas.

CEO Jean Marius Yao announced this initiative during the inauguration of Orange's new headquarters, dubbed ‘Icon 16,’ last week. He described the facility as "more than just a corporate building — it's a bold commitment to Liberia’s digital future and a symbol of confidence in our growth."

Abdullah Kamara, Chairman of the Liberia Telecommunications Authority, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the strategic importance of the investment.

This announcement comes at a time when voice revenue for telecom operators across Africa is stagnating or declining. To counter this trend, Orange is prioritizing growth in data services and mobile money, which have become vital revenue streams. Strengthening network infrastructure will not only enhance the customer experience but also attract new subscribers and encourage the adoption of higher-value digital services.

The investment follows a collaborative initiative with China’s ZTE to extend connectivity to rural communities. Since acquiring Cellcom in 2016, Orange Liberia has established itself as a key player in the country’s telecom sector alongside Lonestar Cell MTN. As of early 2025, the country had approximately 1.84 million internet users, with an internet penetration rate of 32.4%, according to DataReportal.
