The Nigerian government has launched the pilot phase of its 'Fibre-to-Hostel' project at the University of Lagos, aiming to deliver dedicated fibre-optic connectivity, secure Wi-Fi, and real-time performance monitoring directly to student hostels.

Announced by Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, this initiative is part of the broader National Broadband Alliance for Nigeria, focusing on expanding internet access in key institutions.

Partners in the project include Galaxy Backbone, Huawei, and Tizeti, an internet service provider. Students will now have access to broadband speeds between 50-100Mbps — an upgrade from typical mobile data — bringing enterprise-grade connectivity directly into their living spaces.

Minister Tijani highlighted that this development aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s vision for a $1 trillion inclusive digital economy built on world-class infrastructure. He also encouraged students to hold service providers accountable for performance issues, emphasizing transparency and quality in service delivery as key priorities for Nigeria’s digital future.
