The partnership focuses on expanding access to telecommunications and internet services across the region, with a particular emphasis on improving broadband connectivity, fostering digital inclusion, and delivering technology-enabled community support initiatives.
Under the terms of the MoU, Airtel Tanzania and ZICTIA plan to jointly initiate projects that will enhance digital infrastructure and promote broader access to digital financial services, making them more accessible and convenient for local users. This cooperation aims to drive financial inclusion as part of the broader digital economy development in Zanzibar.
Zanzibar’s Minister for Infrastructure, Communication and Transport, Khalid Salum Mohammed, described the agreement as a significant milestone for the island’s digital ambitions. He highlighted that public-private partnerships like this are vital in accelerating the government’s agenda for e-government, e-learning, e-health, and e-commerce, particularly in underserved communities. Mohammed emphasised that such collaborations are essential for empowering local communities, supporting government priorities, and positioning Zanzibar for a future characterised by innovation and inclusive growth.
Charles Kamoto, Managing Director of Airtel Tanzania, echoed these sentiments, stating that the partnership reflects a shared commitment to investing in infrastructure and building partnerships that will help Zanzibar thrive in a digital-first future.
