Located in Chief Chiundaponde, approximately 100km from the district’s central business area, the tower is a key component of Phase III of the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority’s (ZICTA) national communication tower programme.
The Mwelushi Tower is set to serve around 1,700 residents in the Bangweulu wetlands, significantly improving communication and access to vital digital services for the local community. Earlier this year, ZICTA also commissioned the Muwela Communication Tower within the same wetlands, which now provides connectivity to over 8,000 people.
The new infrastructure will enable communities in Chiundaponde and Mpumba chiefdoms to access essential services such as mobile money, electronic vouchers under the Farmer Support Programme, and social cash transfer initiatives. These developments are expected to foster financial inclusion and socio-economic growth. In addition, the tower will support activities related to research, education, and other digital services, further contributing to the region’s development and integration into Zambia’s digital economy.
