Morocco has officially entered the 5G era, with major telecom providers Maroc Telecom, Orange Morocco, and Inwi announcing the deployment of their 5G networks on 7 November.
The new networks deliver speeds exceeding 2 Gbps, near-zero latency, and increased capacity for mobile services. This rollout comes just weeks before the start of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on 21 December, where reliable connectivity will be vital for spectators and organisers alike.
Orange Morocco has already activated its 5G network across 135 prefectures and provinces, covering a substantial part of the country. Maroc Telecom and Inwi are following suit, primarily focusing on major cities and strategic regions, with plans for further expansion in the coming months. For Inwi users, access to the 5G network is automatic for compatible smartphones, requiring no plan or SIM card changes.
This deployment aligns with Morocco’s national "Morocco Digital 2030" strategy, which aims to cover 25% of the population with 5G by the end of 2025 and 70% by 2030. The initiative aims to enhance connectivity, boost the country’s competitiveness, foster technological innovation, and support the growth of the digital economy across sectors such as health, education, public services, and entrepreneurship.
Beyond enabling high-definition streaming, online gaming, and large file sharing, 5G opens the door for innovative professional applications and a transformation in work practices. The 2025 AFCON will serve as a large-scale test and showcase for the network’s capabilities, providing athletes, spectators, and broadcasters with robust, high-performance connectivity essential for live broadcasts and digital services.
Prior to this rollout, Morocco already boasted extensive mobile coverage: 99.64% of the population is served by 3G, 98.63% by 4G, and 99.64% by 2G networks, according to the Ministry of Digital Transition. With its ultra-fast speeds and minimal latency, 5G is poised to significantly transform digital practices in Morocco, supporting telemedicine, remote learning, digital public services, and fostering innovative startups across the country.
